On Friday, November 16, 2012 Mr. Goldie’s grade 12 PE traveled to Ebisu to attend a fitness class and lecture at the Synergy Center.
Fitness for life the main theme of PE courses at Columbia but is a topic of particular emphasis in the grade 12 PE course (PPL 4O), as students approach the end of their guided high school PE career. Throughout this course, Mr. Goldie has been offering students practical advice and teaching key exercise techniques to prepare the grade 12 students to participate in fitness endeavours on their own.
In keeping with this theme, the grade 12’s traveled to a cutting edge training center in Ebisu called the Synergy Center, owned and operated by Travis Johnson Ph.D and his wife Kaori Tani. The Synergy Center is not a typical fitness center. It is focused differentiated, functional exercises that can be done at all experience levels and ages. To quote their website, the mission is as follows:
“… to provide our customers with the results they need so that they can live the life they love, with real solutions for chronic pain, injury prevention & rehabilitation, athletic performance and elite fitness.”
Students participated in an intense fitness circuit consisting of mostly body weight exercises using many different types of equipment such as the TRX Suspension Trainer, the TRX Rip Trainer, the Giant Dual Fit Exercise bike, sand bags, and rubber balls filled with water! Because each exercise was modifiable to each students’ strength level, students reported the workout was difficult but not too hard, therefore very rewarding.
Travis Johnson and Mr. Goldie then lectured on the benefits of functional training over machine based training; women and weight training (Travis shared a recent photo of one of his feamle clients’ body transformation via heavy weight training; students were amazed to see how she wasn’t big and muscular but lean and fit looking);
and the link between being physically strong and self-confidence.
It was an eye-opening experience for the students who have only seen the inside of commercial gyms, full of fixed-pathway machines and cardio equipment. The space at Synergy, although small, reassured students that very smart training can be done in small spaces, at low cost, for life.
