Cancellation of the Book Fair 2013/2013年ブックフェア開催中止について

It is our great regret to inform you all of the cancellation of the Book Fair 2013 scheduled this week although we have just sent you a reminder. The publisher and the bookseller, R.I.C. informed us on Friday evening that they would not be able to hold the event at our school due to their staffing issues. We have sought for options to avoid disappointing hundreds of members who have been looking forward to the fair however, in this short notice, we had to come to a conclusion that we should cancel the event this year.

We apologize for this happening.

The school office

Award winners on the Japanese literacy test

We were very pleased with the results Columbia students achieved on the nation wide Japanese literacy test. Columbia students rank very high when compared to all other schools even those in Japanese private and public schools. Consistently we are finding that the Japanese ability of Columbia students is above those in regular Japanese curriculum schools.  Several students were presented with awards for being above their grade level. Several students achieved levels 2 grades higher on the open ended test. Way to go Columbia elementary. Way to go Columbia elementary.

Outdoor Adventure Club – Ski Trip – Minakami

tenjin-lodgeOn February 22-24, 2013 twelve members of the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) traveled to Minakami for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding, staying at Tenjin Lodge.  http://www.tenjinlodge.com

Gr 8 Girls Ski

The overriding theme of the weekend was the snow conditions.  There were metres of fresh powder snow awaiting us as we began the day on Saturday, February 23rd at the Hodaigi Ski Resort.  http://hodaigi.jp/

We had planned a snowshoeing tour on Sunday, February 24th but had to cancel because of the incredibly poor weather.  Sunday brought full blizzard conditions.  So, led by Keiren McNamara owner-operator of Tenjin Lodge, we traveled back to Hodaigi for a half day of skiing-snowboarding.

Tokuragawa Onsen

[Japan’s largest outdoor hotspring!]

After skiing-snowboarding we enjoyed dipping in onsen water at two different onsens.  On Saturday, Takaragawa Onsen, featuring Japan’s largest outdoor bath (rotemburo)!  It was a beautiful, traditional Japanese sight watching the snow gently fall all around.   http://www.takaragawa.com/

Suzumorinoyu Onsen

On Sunday, Suzumorinoyu Onsen; a more modern onsen on perfectly located near Jomokogen station where we boarded the shinkansen to return home.  http://ameblo.jp/suzumori-noyu/

Tenjin Dining

The students enjoyed a big pasta dinner on Friday evening, delicious and warm nabe prepared by Keiren’s wife, Bo McNamara as well as scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast both mornings.

The Outdoor Adventure Club is looking forward to warmer for a camping trip!  If you’re interested, check the OAC bulletin board or Mr. Goldie’s homepage on the CIS Intranet for more information.

NASA comes to Columbia Sci FI – 2013

Sci FI – 2013 was held at Columbia International School. Students from grades 6 – 12 presented there science fair projects last weekend. Scientist from Riken Science Center and representatives from NASA were on hand to review the science projects and offer their expert insight into the wonderful world of Science. Mr Blackerby from NASA fascinated the audience with his presentation on NASA’s adventures in our solar system. It was a day full of wonder and you could see the excitement on our young scientists faces as they discussed their project with the experts from Riken and NASA. All of us at Columbia are thankful for the tremendous support we received from Riken Science Center and NASA.
